摘要｜Abstract
In this talk, I will cover three recent works, all related to the topic of how risk shapes prosocial behavior. In the first paper, we conducted a lab experiment with students, extending the existing work of Exley (2016) to the loss domain, exemplified by a myriad of negative externalities. We show that individuals tend to use risk as excuses in both gain and loss domains, but the extent of excuses varies widely and depends on several factors. We provide a self-signaling model to explain these results. In the second paper, we conducted an on-site field experiment of public good games with risk farmers in four developing countries. We show that economic models with pure risk preferences and impure altruism cannot fully explain our data. However, our empirical findings are consistent with the idea that people may exploit the notion of risk to safeguard their self-image while not cooperating. In the last paper, we conducted a lab experiment with students to understand whether individuals are able to predict others’ excuse-driven risk behavior. We find that they can. This enriches our understanding of how the existence of strategic behavior can complicate decision-making through the effects of risk on morality.
